Adults will start entering the National Disability Insurance Scheme in South Australia from tomorrow 1 July 2017.
The NDIS is the biggest social reform since Medicare, introducing a new way of providing disability services that gives people with disability more choice about the support they receive. Children up to age 14 started entering the NDIS under a trial in South Australia in 2013, followed by young people aged 15 to 17 in January this year.
Between July 2017 and April 2018, adults with disability around the State will start joining the scheme, based on their geographic area.
Northern Adelaide, the Barossa, Light and Lower North are the first regions to enter full scheme tomorrow.
Premier Jay Weatherill and Minister for Disabilities Leesa Vlahos joined members of the disability community in Salisbury today for a morning tea to mark the milestone.
South Australia was one of the first states to sign up to the NDIS and, at full rollout, the State Government will be investing $723 million annually into the scheme. More than 32,000 South Australians will receive services under the full scheme – increased from around 17,000 pre-NDIS.
Jobs in the South Australian disability sector will double from about 6000 to about 12,000. The NDIS rollout schedule is will start with Northern Adelaide and Barossa, Light and Lower North in July 2017. North Eastern Adelaide, the Murray Mallee and Limestone Coast will be next on October 1 2017. Southern Adelaide, Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island, Yorke Peninsula and Mid North, Far North, Eyre Peninsula and West will follow in January 2018 and Western Adelaide, Eastern Adelaide and Adelaide Hills will start in April 201
