The Eritrean Community of Australia organised a memorial event at North Melbourne Community centre on 12 September 2013 to pay respect to and remember the hunders of Eritreans who perished following an asylum seekers’ boat sinking near the Italn island of Lampadusa. More than three hundred African individuals perished in this tragedy in early October with the majority of them from Eritrea. Several community leaders and local dignitaries attended the event which brought together approximately two hundred people from the Eritrean and wider African community.
