Kate Lundy attended a meeting of the Melbourne employment forum on Friday 1 December 2012 and announced, on behalf of Bill Shorten, the minister for employment ,that the Gillard government has provided a $20.000 grant to the newly formed Melbourne Employment Forum (MEF) to help the organisation address some of the issues and challenges that affect the new and emerging communities, especially the african communities who are reported to have quite a high rate of unemployment and underemployment affecting men and youth groups in these communities.
