Two African families sharing a home in Perth, WA were lucky to escape a fire that tore through their property in the early hours of 1 January 2016. A passerby noticed the smoke and knocked at the Ellenbrook home, enabling 15 people who were sleeping inside to escape from the fire unharmed.

The two family lost everything and did not have insurance for their home. The Ellenbrook community and the neighbours have come to the rescue of the family by providing clotting, food and helping with blankets, clothing and food.

The destroyed property in this story had a fire alarm, however, the fire started in the roof space, the alarm took time to go off and it was too late to save the home. Eleven children were inside the house with the youngest being just over 12 months. This is the second tragic event african family since the beginning of this year, after two children drowned at Glenelg Beach in Adelaide on 1 January 2016.
