A group of boys present at the scene tried to save the boy but were unsuccessful.

Paramedics also attended the site and gave him CPR, but they were unable to resuscitate him. They said they could not establish how long the boy had been in the water, before anyone noticed him.

The boy’s mother was at the beach but she was reported not to have seen the teenager for about two of hours and did not suspect that he had drowned.

On 1 January 2016, two young African children from Burundi aged 11 drowned at the same beach when trying to cool off a very hot day in Adelaide.
