Melbourne-based Africa Day Australia (ADA) recently hosted a meaningful International Women’s Day gathering to close out Women’s Month. The event brought together women for an afternoon centred on wellbeing, personal growth and collective reflection, creating a space that was both energising and introspective, seamlessly blending physical activity, storytelling and creative expression.
The afternoon began with a Pilates session led by Panashe Chitsike, setting a tone of balance and mindfulness. It was a reminder that wellbeing is not separate from purpose, but an essential foundation for it. Even for those who chose to observe rather than fully participate, the atmosphere itself carried a sense of calm and connection.

The highlight of the event was the keynote address by Patience K., whose message resonated deeply with attendees. She challenged women to take ownership of their personal narratives, warning that if you do not define your own story, someone else will do it for you. Her reflections on growth were equally striking, emphasising that true development often happens in difficult moments rather than in comfort.
Her message also carried a strong call to action: no one is coming to grant permission. Progress requires initiative, courage and the willingness to move forward despite uncertainty. Beyond individual ambition, she framed success as something bigger—an opportunity to create pathways and possibilities for future generations.
The event concluded with a creative segment that invited participants to reflect on their individuality and the impact they leave behind. It was a symbolic and engaging way to end the afternoon, reinforcing themes of identity, legacy and self-expression.
While simple in structure, the gathering stood out for its depth of message. It moved beyond celebration into a space of honest reflection, raising important questions about growth, ownership and responsibility. In doing so, it captured the evolving voice of African women in Australia—one that is grounded, intentional and forward-looking.
