Melbourne marked Djibouti’s Independence Day on 27 June with a day of cultural pride, reflection, and community unity, as members of the Djibouti diaspora gathered across two key events organised by the Djibouti Community Council of Australia.
The day began at Federation Square with a formal flag-raising ceremony that drew community members together in the heart of the city. The ceremony served as a symbolic moment of national pride, honouring Djibouti’s independence achieved in 1977, while also highlighting the strong presence and cohesion of the Djiboutian community in Victoria.
In the evening, celebrations continued with a well-coordinated community event that brought together families, elders, youth, and invited guests. The gathering was marked by a strong sense of cultural identity and shared heritage, as attendees reflected on the significance of independence and the journey of the Djiboutian nation.
The event also attracted the participation of civic leaders, including the Mayors of Maribyrnong and Yarra City Councils, alongside representatives from Victoria Police. Notably, African officers serving within Victoria Police were also present, underscoring the growing diversity within public institutions and their connection to multicultural communities.
The evening program featured speeches, networking, and community engagement, reinforcing the importance of diaspora-led initiatives in strengthening social cohesion and cultural continuity. Organisers were commended for delivering a structured and inclusive celebration that successfully brought together multiple generations and stakeholders.
President Bachir Mohamed, the organising committee, and volunteers were acknowledged for their commitment and coordination in delivering the event. Their efforts were widely recognised as central to the success of the day’s commemorations.
