Michael Gawenda is from Melbourne University’s Centre for Advanced Journalism. This veteran journalist and former editor of the THE AGE newspaper in Melbourne knows what he is talking about when he speaks about media reporting and the relationship between journalists and the general community. In this video, Michael talks about the media project he is running with members of the Sudanese community. The project is called AusSud and it provides journalism training to (South) Sudanese-Australians in partnership with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and the Australian Multicultural Education Service (AMES). Speaking on the recent publication by the THE AGE on Victoria Police crime statistics relating to Africans, a publication that raised a lot concern and anger in the community, Michael agrees the article could have been written better and that journalists should make extra efforts to think about the effects of their publications on the welfare of the community (or sections of the community) and provide sufficient context and balance to what they report about.
