Six African-born AFL players from different clubs around the country come together to meet with the community at AFL headquarters in Docklands, as part of the AFL’s Africa Day celebration on Tuesday, May 24th , 2016 .

Majak Daw (North Melbourne), Ruben Willians (Brisbane Lions), Aliir Aliir (Sydney Swans), Gach Nyon (Essendon Bombers), Mabior Chol (Richmond Tigers) and Jason Johannison (Western Bulldogs), all came together to share their stories and experiences with the community and responded to questions from the public.
Over one hundred people attended the event, including many young people from the South Sudanese community who appeared very excited not just to meet their favourite football stars, but also learn from their experience.
The players talked about their desire to give back to their community in different ways and help inspire young people to go for their dreams, whether in Football, other Sports or any other field. From mentoring young people, getting involved in various community activities or encouraging parents to support their children’s desire to play sport, the AFL players all appeared keen to be able to contribute to the community as role models.
Africa day is an annual commemoration of the founding of the Organisation of African Unity. The event takes place on 25 May of every year, commemorating the signing of a founding charter where 32 independent African states came together to form the Organisation of African Unity. In Melbourne, several activities are organised every year by Africa Day Melbourne, bringing different African community organisations and the broader community together.
