In a powerful recognition of leadership, resilience, and community impact, Tendayi Ganga has been named 2026 Canberra Citizen of the Year, shining a spotlight on the growing influence of African-Australian leaders across the country.

Founder of the Born To Shine Organisation, Tendayi Ganga has dedicated her work to uplifting women and families since launching the initiative in 2019 in Canberra. What began as a vision to support women has grown into a dynamic platform delivering mentorship, skills development, financial empowerment, and family-focused programs.

At the heart of her work is a simple but powerful mission: to help women discover their strength, overcome barriers, and pursue their goals with confidence. Through keynote speeches, grassroots workshops, and community engagement, Tendayi has consistently created pathways for growth and transformation.

One of the organisation’s most impactful milestones came in 2025, with the launch of its first Mother–Daughter Event Against Domestic Violence. This initiative provided a safe and supportive environment for open dialogue on a sensitive issue, while raising awareness and strengthening community bonds. It is this ability to lead meaningful conversations—often on difficult topics—that sets her leadership apart.

Beyond programs and events, Born To Shine continues to offer practical support through mentorship, guidance, and access to resources that empower women economically and socially. The organisation’s holistic approach—combining personal development with family and community engagement—has made it a vital pillar within Canberra’s multicultural landscape.

The Canberra Citizen of the Year Award recognises individuals who have made a significant contribution to the community, and Tendayi’s impact clearly embodies this spirit. Her work not only uplifts individuals but also strengthens the social fabric of the wider community.

Reacting to the award, Tendayi expressed deep gratitude, reaffirming her purpose: to create spaces where women and families can thrive and realise their full potential. Her words reflect a philosophy rooted in empowerment and collective progress—values that resonate strongly within the African-Australian community.

This recognition is more than a personal achievement; it is a celebration of representation, leadership, and the growing contribution of African-Australians to the nation’s development. Tendayi Ganga’s journey stands as an inspiring example of what is possible when purpose meets action—and when communities are given the tools to truly shine.
