In Memoriam: Inga Peulich, former liberal MP – A Champion of Multiculturalism and Democracy

by  Africa Media Australia

Victoria has lost a dedicated advocate for multicultural communities and a steadfast defender of democracy with the passing of Inga Peulich. A prominent figure in Melbourne’s south-east and the Liberal Party, Inga’s legacy is one of commitment, resilience, and unyielding passion for fairness.

Born to a parent who suffered under a communist regime, Inga Peulich’s life was shaped by a profound appreciation for democracy and freedom. Her dedication to these values was evident throughout her 22 years in the Victorian Parliament.

Inga’s political journey began with her election to the Bentleigh District in 1992 as part of the Kennett Government, securing the seat with a remarkable 9.7 per cent swing from Labor. Her background as a local Councillor, teacher, and President of the Victorian Parents of Children in Day Care laid a solid foundation for her political career.

As a former Vice President of the Victorian Liberal Party, Inga’s return to the Victorian Parliament in 2006 as a Member for South-Eastern Metropolitan Region marked another significant milestone. Her experience and strategic acumen played a crucial role in the election of the Baillieu Government in 2010.

Inga held several key positions, including Cabinet Secretary, Parliamentary Secretary for Education, Shadow Minister for Multicultural Affairs, Shadow Minister for Scrutiny of Government, Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Wastewatch, and Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Education and Communities. Her contributions in these roles underscored her commitment to transparency, education, and the betterment of Victoria’s diverse communities.

In her Inaugural Speech, Inga reflected on her personal journey and the broader significance of her election: “My election to the Victorian Parliament is a proud and perhaps even symbolic occasion which proves what is possible in this great land of ours. In 1967, the year the seat of Bentleigh was created, my parents, like many other migrants, came to Australia with four suitcases, a couple of small children and very little else. Through sheer hard work, initiative and self-sacrifice they were able to realise their dreams.”

The thoughts and condolences of the Liberal Party and the broader community are with Inga’s husband Savo, her children Paul and Nena, and her extended family during this time of mourning. Inga Peulich’s legacy will continue to inspire and guide the efforts towards a fairer, more inclusive Victoria.
