The Australian Government has unveiled the long-awaited Multicultural Framework Review, marking the first significant evaluation of Australia’s multicultural landscape in a generation. This thorough and independent report, released today, evaluates the vitality of the nation’s diverse society and offers recommendations to ensure its strength for future generations.
Australia’s last substantial review of multiculturalism occurred over fifty years ago. Since then, the nation has evolved into a beacon of diversity, welcoming individuals from nearly every corner of the globe. Today, more than half of Australians are either born overseas or have at least one parent who was.
The report was meticulously prepared by a panel of three distinguished Australians: Dr. Bulent Hass Dellal AO, Ms. Nyadol Nyuon OAM, and Ms. Christine Castley. Their efforts included extensive nationwide consultations, engaging with over 1,430 individuals and 750 organizations, including various community groups, across more than 200 events.
The review received 796 submissions in multiple formats, including written submissions, audio, and video messages, reflecting a novel and inclusive approach. Impressively, 126 submissions, accounting for nearly one-sixth of the total, were in languages other than English, ensuring broad community participation.
To enhance accessibility, the executive summary of the report is available in 33 languages on the Home Affairs website, enabling individuals with varying levels of English proficiency to understand the review’s outcomes.
In conjunction with the release of the review and the government’s response, the Albanese Government has pledged over $100 million to bolster a stronger multicultural Australia. This funding will support language services, enhance community engagement, and empower multicultural organizations to improve their facilities and better serve both their specific communities and the broader Australian society.
The Multicultural Framework Review is set to shape the understanding of multiculturalism and inform future policy decisions, underscoring Australia’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse nation.
