Daniel Haile-Michael along with five other young African men took Victoria Police to court on claims of discrimination. The matter was recently settled through an agreement and Victoria Police has undertaken to conduct an inquiry to look at its cultural training and field contact in reponse to grievances from these young men (and through them many other members of the broader African community). In this two-parts interview, Daniel talks to AMA’s C.S Sharady regarding the case and describes in vivid detail his experience with some members of the police when growing up in the Flemington area in Melbourne and he also urges Victoria Police to take this opportunity to bring about effective change in the way it deals with Africans. Part 2 of this interview is to be published shorty on AMA- Stay tuned.
