“Not Today!” : The extraordinary Tale of a Western Australian Teen Who Swam Four Hours to Save His Family from the Indian Ocean

Western Australia is celebrating an extraordinary act of bravery after 13-year-old Austin Applebee swam for four hours through cold and dangerous waters of the Indian Ocean to save his mother and two siblings who were swept out to sea near Quindalup.

What began as a family outing quickly turned into a life-or-death ordeal when strong currents carried Austin’s mother and younger siblings far from shore while they clung desperately to paddleboards. As daylight began to fade and exhaustion set in, the family faced the terrifying reality of being stranded in open waters.

Showing remarkable courage beyond his years, Austin made a decision that would ultimately save their lives. After speaking with his mother, he chose to swim for help — a journey that would stretch over four kilometres and take four gruelling hours, while the family drifted more than 13 kilometres from their original location.

Along the way, Austin made tough choices to improve his chances of survival. He first abandoned his inflatable kayak as it began taking on water, then removed his life jacket, which was slowing his movement in the strong surf.

According to The West Australian, the young hero had recently failed his VacSwim swimming lessons — a detail that has since stunned many — yet he pushed through using a mix of breaststroke, freestyle and what he described as “survival backstroke.”

“The waves were massive, and I had no life jacket on,” Austin recalled. “I just kept thinking, ‘Just keep swimming, just keep swimming.’”

To fight off fatigue and fear, he focused on positive thoughts — praying, thinking about his friends, his girlfriend, and even Thomas the Tank Engine — anything to keep his mind strong during the exhausting swim.

When Austin finally reached shore, he collapsed from exhaustion. But the heroic effort wasn’t over. Summoning his last reserves of energy, he ran nearly two kilometres to raise the alarm.

Emergency services quickly dispatched helicopters, which later rescued his mother and siblings after they had been stranded on the water for nearly 10 hours.

The remarkable rescue has since been hailed as a powerful example of courage, resilience and the strength of family bonds.

Austin’s story has touched hearts across Western Australia and beyond — a reminder of the unpredictable power of the ocean, the importance of water safety, and the incredible potential for bravery even in the youngest among us.

Above all, it stands as a testament to a young boy’s determination and love — a moment when giving up was simply not an option.
