Boxing Legends Set Sights on Kinshasa for 2026 Exhibition Showdown

by  Africa Media Australia

Two of boxing’s most recognisable figures — Mike Tyson and Floyd Mayweather Jr. — are reportedly preparing for a high-profile exhibition bout scheduled for 25 April 2026 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Multiple international reports indicate that the proposed venue is Kinshasa, a city etched in boxing history. The Congolese capital famously hosted the legendary 1974 “Rumble in the Jungle,” where Muhammad Ali defeated George Foreman for the heavyweight championship — a moment that remains one of the most iconic events in global sport.

Tyson’s Return to the Spotlight

Tyson, now 59, last stepped into the ring in November 2024 in a widely streamed bout against Jake Paul, broadcast on Netflix. The eight-round contest ended in a unanimous decision loss for the former heavyweight champion. Tyson’s last professional victory dates back to 2003, when he defeated Clifford Etienne.

Despite questions about his competitive form, Tyson has continued to command global attention, drawing massive audiences whenever he returns to the ring — even in exhibition settings.

Mayweather’s Exhibition Circuit

Mayweather, 48, retired with a flawless 50-0 professional record after defeating MMA star Conor McGregor in 2017. Since then, he has built a lucrative post-retirement career through exhibition fights around the world.

His most recent appearance came in August 2024 against John Gotti III, marking his eighth exhibition outing since leaving professional competition. Mayweather’s brand remains commercially powerful, particularly in international markets.

Event Timeline and Uncertainty

Initial announcements about a Tyson–Mayweather exhibition surfaced in September 2025, though concrete details were scarce. At one stage, the proposed matchup appeared uncertain after Mayweather confirmed a separate engagement against Mike Zambidis in Greece for June.

However, Tyson recently reaffirmed that discussions are active, suggesting the Congolese event is moving forward.

A Historic Opportunity for Kinshasa

If confirmed, the bout would position Kinshasa once again at the centre of global boxing attention — more than five decades after hosting one of the sport’s most celebrated fights.

For the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the event could represent more than a sporting spectacle. Major boxing exhibitions often generate international media coverage, tourism flows and commercial partnerships, creating potential economic ripple effects.

While official promotional details are still pending, anticipation is already building around what could become one of 2026’s most talked-about sporting events.
