A new business development initiative is opening doors for African-Australian professionals and entrepreneurs in Western Australia, with enrolments now open for the inaugural Baobab African-Australian Business Masterclass to be held at Curtin University in Perth from 13 to 17 April 2026.
Inspired by the iconic Baobab tree — a symbol of resilience, shared roots and long-term growth across Africa and Australia — the program is designed to strengthen community foundations while equipping participants with practical skills to build sustainable businesses and economic independence.
The Baobab Masterclass is a customised five-day intensive course created specifically for members of the African diaspora in WA who are looking to start, grow, formalise or scale their businesses. It also supports professionals seeking stronger business, financial and entrepreneurial capabilities to improve career outcomes or manage commercial ventures more effectively.
Participants will gain hands-on knowledge across key areas including:
• Business planning and strategic growth
• Bookkeeping and financial management
• Branding, marketing and customer engagement
• Legal compliance and risk management
• Entrepreneurial thinking and business relationships
Delivered by Curtin Business School, Curtin Executive Education and the Centre for Australia-Africa Relations, the program brings together experienced educators and industry experts from both African and non-African backgrounds, offering real-world insights and culturally informed learning.
What makes this initiative particularly impactful is that it has been shaped directly by ongoing consultations with African-Australian communities in Western Australia, alongside Australian entrepreneurs of African heritage and corporate stakeholders operating across Africa. This ensures the training responds to real challenges faced by the community, rather than generic business theory.
Beyond skills development, the Baobab Masterclass represents a broader commitment to economic empowerment, wealth creation and community self-sufficiency. By strengthening entrepreneurial capacity, the program helps participants build businesses that create jobs, support families, and contribute meaningfully to the wider Australian economy.
With participants from all levels of experience — from aspiring entrepreneurs to established business owners — the masterclass also fosters strong networks and mentorship opportunities that extend well beyond the classroom.
As African-Australian communities continue to grow and diversify across Australia, initiatives like the Baobab Masterclass play a critical role in unlocking potential, reducing economic barriers, and nurturing the next generation of business leaders.
For those seeking practical tools, confidence, and connections to transform ideas into thriving enterprises, the Baobab African-Australian Business Masterclass offers a timely and powerful opportunity.
