Networking African-Australians (NAF) is an organisation that helps African-Australian youth grow into confident, capable and community-minded leaders. Based in Victoria and active across Melbourne and Shepparton, the organisation is committed to inspiring and supporting young people to thrive — today, tomorrow and into the future.
At the heart of its current work is the UBUNTU Youth Wellbeing Program , a dynamic initiative designed to strengthen cultural identity, wellbeing and leadership among African-Australian students. The program is centred on the theme: Cultural Identity – “Who Am I?”

Recently, participants of its leadership program explored the powerful African philosophy of Ubuntu, meaning “I am because we are.” Through guided discussions and engaging activities, young people unpacked what it means to belong — not only as individuals, but as part of families, communities and a broader multicultural Australia.
Ubuntu teaches unity, empathy and shared responsibility. For many African-Australian youth navigating dual identities, this principle offers clarity and grounding. It reminds them that identity is not built in isolation, but shaped through relationships, community values and collective support.

Respect was another key focus of the session. Young participants reflected on how to demonstrate respect toward parents, older siblings, elders and community leaders — values deeply rooted in African traditions. These conversations extended beyond theory, encouraging practical application at home, at school and within peer groups.
Networking African-Australians understands that youth development must be holistic. Its vision is to inspire and support every African-Australian, from all walks of life, to be their best. Its mission is to provide professional and personal skills, along with meaningful experiences, that enhance education outcomes, mental health, job opportunities, leadership skills and confidence.
The organisation’s motto — Today, Tomorrow, The Future — reflects its long-term commitment to generational impact. By strengthening identity today, it is cultivating resilient leaders for tomorrow and shaping a stronger community for the future.

Importantly, the UBUNTU Youth Wellbeing Program also encourages parents and carers to continue these conversations at home. By reinforcing values such as unity, respect and cultural pride within families, the impact extends beyond the classroom and into everyday life.
In a time when many young people face challenges around belonging and representation, Networking African-Australians is creating safe spaces where African heritage is celebrated, leadership is nurtured, and community is strengthened.
Through Ubuntu, they are not simply running programs — they are building a movement rooted in the belief that when one rises, the community rises together.
