The Australia Zambia Business Council recently accomplished what many diplomatic initiatives promise but rarely achieve — a decisive move from dialogue to tangible action. Through a carefully coordinated trade delegation, the Council brought together Australian innovators and experts for an immersive engagement in Zambia’s Western Province.
For decades, bilateral relations have often played out in sanitised boardrooms, marked by ceremonial handshakes and carefully worded joint statements. The mission took a different path. It was an immersion, not a visit. Led by Chargé d’Affaires Maya Sydney, who also serves as Founder and CEO of Geo9, the delegation brought together a powerhouse of specialists offering solutions tailored not just to market demand, but to the developmental aspirations of the communities they engaged with.

AZBC trade delegation in Zambia
Central to the mission’s success was its reception by the Barotse Royal Establishment (BRE), an engagement that lent the visit both cultural legitimacy and political weight. High-level discussions with the Right Honourable Ngambela, Mukela Manyando—effectively the Prime Minister of Barotseland—and the broader KUTA (Royal Council) focused on ensuring that any projects emerging from the partnership would align with the welfare of local people. It was a clear signal that this mission was built on collaboration, not extraction.
The delegation explored tangible innovations with real-world applications: renewable energy solutions tailored to Zambia’s environment, and revolutionary approaches to mining valuation that could transform how mineral wealth is leveraged as financial instruments—all while preserving the country’s pristine ecosystems. The partnership with Barotseland Express LLC, founded by local entrepreneur Godwin Mando Kaluwe, emerged as a shining example of the private-sector excellence the AZBC aims to foster.

As AZBC Vice President Dr. Cranston Haankwenda recently observed: “the Australia-Zambia relationship is entering a new era. This mission has proven that when experts, investors, and local authorities align, the result is not just rhetoric but delivery“. The delegation has returned home with more than memoranda of understanding; they bring with them a template for how sustainable, community-aligned trade can work in practice.
Project updates and exclusive footage from the field are now being compiled, offering a glimpse into what may well be remembered as the moment the Australia-Zambia corridor moved from potential to momentum.
