Truganina’s Arndell Park came alive from December 31 to January 4 as the Australian Oromo community gathered for Oromo Week 2026, a week-long festival of sport, culture, and unity. Organized in just two weeks, the event drew families, youth, and elders from across Melbourne and beyond, creating a space that celebrated heritage while fostering community pride.

More than a sports and cultural tournament, Oromo Week became a symbol of connection and resilience. “Seeing the youth engage with our traditions and express pride in their roots was incredibly moving,” said one of the event organizers. Another added, “This is about more than football or music—it’s about passing on culture and strengthening our community bonds.”

Throughout the week, attendees experienced Oromo cultural performances, traditional music and dance, and storytelling that highlighted the community’s rich history. The event also provided a platform for elders to share stories and wisdom, ensuring that younger generations remain connected to their roots.

Volunteers worked tirelessly to bring the community together, and local businesses and organizations provided crucial support. The festival was also an opportunity to showcase Oromo food, art, and social traditions, giving both attendees and visitors a deeper understanding of a community that has thrived in Australia while maintaining strong cultural ties.

Oromo Week 2026 left a lasting impact, inspiring hope and pride while demonstrating the power of unity. As one organizer put it, “When we come together like this, we remember who we are and what we can achieve as a community.”
