Melbourne — The Somali Australian Friendship Association (SAFA) held its 19th Annual Graduation Ceremony and Community Awards on Friday 19 December 2025, bringing together students, families and community members to recognise academic achievement and community contribution.

The annual event, now a long-standing fixture within the Somali Australian community, highlights the importance of education as both a personal and collective pathway to progress. Graduates from secondary and tertiary institutions were acknowledged alongside individuals recognised for their contributions to community development and leadership.

Founded with a focus on youth empowerment, SAFA has over the years positioned education as a cornerstone of community advancement. The graduation and awards ceremony reflects this philosophy, reinforcing the idea that individual success is closely linked to the wellbeing and strength of the wider community.

Speakers at the event emphasised that the ceremony was not only about celebrating results, but also about recognising effort, resilience and the support systems that enable young people to succeed. The presence of families, mentors and community leaders underscored the collective nature of achievement being honoured.

For many attendees, the event served as both recognition and motivation. Graduates were encouraged to see themselves as role models for younger community members, while students still in their academic journeys were reminded that their efforts are valued and supported.

Beyond the awards themselves, the ceremony highlighted SAFA’s broader role in fostering social cohesion and encouraging positive educational outcomes. By creating a space where success is publicly acknowledged, the association continues to promote aspiration, confidence and a sense of belonging among Somali Australians.

As SAFA approaches two decades of community service, the graduation and community awards program remains a key expression of its mission: supporting individuals to thrive while strengthening the community as a whole.
